The tech industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world, yet it continues to face challenges regarding diversity. While the landscape has improved in some areas, it remains predominantly male. There's still much work to ensure the tech industry increases diversity, but today, I want to explore why diversity matters.

Why diversity matters

The case for diversity in business is undeniable. Diverse teams bring various perspectives that can lead to more creative solutions, increased innovation, and better decision-making. In the tech industry, which directly shapes the world's future, inclusivity is essential for reflecting the diverse populations we serve and ensuring that products and services are built with a wide range of needs in mind.

The gender gap in tech

One of the most noticeable gaps in the tech industry is gender diversity. Women continue to be underrepresented in many areas of tech. For example, women comprise only 17% of the cybersecurity workforce. A gender imbalance isn't just a societal issue; it's an economic one, with diverse teams potentially boosting business outcomes.

Why does diversity matter in cybersecurity?

In the cybersecurity industry, diverse teams aren’t just important for innovation - they are essential for addressing the complexities of the digital threats we face today. Cybersecurity is a global challenge that requires perspectives from people from different backgrounds to approach problems creatively and ensure that nothing is overlooked.

Diverse teams will bring unique insights into problem-solving, design, and leadership, and research suggests that when it comes to profitability, the more diverse a company is, the more likely it is to outperform less diverse peers.

How to increase diversity in tech

Diversity in tech is not something that will happen on its own, it requires deliberate and sustained effort from organisations, leaders, and individuals. Here are some actions we can take to create a more inclusive tech industry:

  1. Start early - encourage STEM education for all: The path to a diverse tech workforce starts long before a candidate enters the job market. We must encourage students from diverse backgrounds, particularly young girls, to pursue STEM education. Initiatives like Girls Who Code are taking steps to introduce tech careers to underrepresented groups. We must support young girls through mentorship, programs, and resources to keep them on the path to tech careers.

  2. Create an inclusive recruitment process: Many tech companies are rethinking their recruitment processes to reduce unconscious bias and ensure they are attracting diverse talent. This might be from using gender-neutral job descriptions to offering flexible working hours and remote work options that can attract candidates from different backgrounds.

  3. Implement mentorship programs: One of the most effective ways to retain diverse talent in the tech industry is through mentorship. Women often face unique challenges when navigating their careers in a male-dominated environment. By offering mentorship programs that pair junior employees with experienced leaders, we can provide guidance, career development opportunities, and a sense of belonging.

Mentorship programs can help women in tech stay in the workforce longer and advance into leadership positions.

  4. Build inclusive company cultures: Outside of recruitment and mentorship, creating a culture of inclusion is vital to retaining diverse talent. Companies should focus on offering equal opportunities, prioritising work-life balance and creating a space where employees feel safe to express themselves and their ideas.

  5. Address pay inequality: Gender pay gaps persist across many industries, including tech. Addressing pay inequality through transparent pay structures, equal pay audits, and closing the wage gap will be critical in creating an equitable work environment.

Diversity beyond gender: the importance of racial and socioeconomic inclusion

While much of the conversation around diversity in tech has focused on gender, it’s important to recognise that diversity is multidimensional. Last year, the Tech Talent Charter published a report: 'Diversity in Tech,' sharing stats and insights on diversity and inclusion across the UK tech industry, highlighting inequalities across the sector. Reports like this are crucial to helping us understand the challenges and work together to improve diversity in tech in the future.

The future of tech is diverse

The tech industry has made significant advances, but there's plenty still to be done. As a female cybersecurity professional, I am passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion. We must ensure the future of tech is one where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or background, has an equal opportunity to thrive. Together, we can create a diverse tech industry and build a stronger, more resilient future for all.
